The stitching was never the hard part.
A single panel can hold weeks of work. It leaves the maker's hands for a fraction of what it finally retails for abroad, because the person who can invoice a foreign boutique, clear customs and answer emails in English is the person who owns the customer — and it is almost never the woman who stitched it.
Nothing about that is a skills problem. It is a paperwork problem, a payments problem, and a storytelling problem. Those are the three things we took on.

Threadbayt is a managed marketplace, not a listings board. A maker or a cooperative hands over finished pieces; everything between the workshop and the buyer's door is ours to run — and the credit line stays hers, permanently, on every listing the piece ever appears in.
Maker profile & provenance
Every piece carries the maker's name, her village as she chooses to record it, and the meaning of the stitch pattern in her words.
Shipping & customs handled
Consolidated international freight, commercial invoices, HS classification and origin paperwork prepared and filed by us.
Settlement in local currency
The buyer pays in their currency; the maker is paid in hers, on a published schedule, with the full breakdown itemised.
Buyer messaging with translation
Questions about sizing, thread, timing or custom colourways arrive translated both ways, so the conversation stays direct.
Wholesale & commissions
A separate channel for boutiques, museum shops and interior designers ordering in volume or commissioning bespoke work.
Cooperative group accounts
A cooperative lists under one account and sets its own split. Payouts follow those shares automatically, itemised per member.

Register the work
Join as an individual maker or as a cooperative. We record who stitched what, the motif family, and how each maker wants to be credited.

We photograph and list
Pieces are collected, photographed, measured and written up. You approve the listing, the price and the story before it goes live.

We ship and clear
Orders are packed and consolidated into international freight. Customs paperwork, duties and tracking are handled end to end.

You are paid
Settlement lands in local currency with the full breakdown: sale price, commission, shipping, and what reached you.
Provenance
A record travels with the piece, and it names a person.
Motif families in tatreez are shared, adapted and carried between households and regions over generations. We describe them generically and record attribution only as the maker herself gives it — we never assign a pattern to a village to make a listing sound better.

- Eight-pointed star — a geometric family found across many embroidery traditions in the region and worked in countless local variations.
- Technique
- Hand-worked cross stitch on even-weave linen, counted from the ground fabric rather than printed or traced.
- Thread & ground
- Cotton floss in the madder-red family with ochre and olive accents, on undyed cream linen.
- Maker
- Named on the listing, with the village recorded exactly as she chooses to record it — or withheld entirely if she prefers.
- Time at the frame
- Logged by the maker herself and shown to the buyer, because hours are what the price is actually made of.
- Settlement
- Paid in local currency on dispatch, with the sale price, the 18% commission and the freight cost itemised in full.
Where a motif's meaning is contested or simply not known, the listing says so. An honest record is worth more to a buyer than a confident invention.

Figures shown are Threadbayt's launch pricing and may be revised; any change is published before it takes effect and never applied to work already listed. Cooperative accounts split payouts according to the shares the group itself sets.
What we publish
Three numbers, from settlement data, every quarter.
Threadbayt is working with its first cohort of makers and cooperatives. Rather than quote figures we cannot yet audit, we have committed to publishing these three — with the method used to calculate each one — from the day the first cohort ships.
